Why I Love Tortilla Pizza
If it isn’t obvious, any meal that is done in 5 minutes will always be a favorite! This recipe is our go-to when our schedule gets messed up and there isn’t time to make what was planned. And especially since my kids do most of the cooking around here, the more recipes that are easy for them to throw together on their own, the better!
We usually make this tortilla pizza recipe in the oven, but I’ve included directions for the air fryer and grill as well. Use whichever is best for you. And, don’t hesitate to try out some of the recipe variations included in this post because heaven knows that inside every family is at least one person who won’t eat some part of your dinner. In our family, it’s my child who “hates” pizza with tomato sauce. Life must be so tough…
What is a Tortilla Pizza
Simply stated, a tortilla pizza is a pizza that uses flour tortillas as its crust instead of the standard yeast dough. It is popular because it can be made very quickly and is an easy recipe that kids can make all on their own in either the oven or in an air fryer. Tortilla pizzas are also very easy to customize with different sauces, toppings, and cheeses to meet individual tastes.

How to Make Tortilla Pizza
Prepare the racks in your oven
Lower the top rack of your oven so it is on the second highest level from the top.
Toast one side of the tortillas
Place the flour tortillas on an oven-safe cooling rack, then onto a rimmed baking sheet. Place them under the broiler until they turn brown.

Flip the tortilla over so the toasted side is down. Add the sauce, both cheeses, and pepperoni.

Cut and serve
Use a sharp knife to cut into four wedges.
Recipe FAQs
What is tortilla pizza made of?
A tortilla pizza is made very simply of a flour tortilla, marinara sauce, Parmesan and mozzarella cheese, then topped with pepperoni or other pizza toppings. The toppings can be swapped out based on personal preference.
How many calories in a tortilla pizza?
One tortilla pizza topped with 6 pepperoni slices has 223 calories and 10 grams of protein for a whole pizza. If you want fewer calories, try using turkey pepperoni, or topping the tortilla pizza with vegetables instead.
Can tortilla pizza be made in an air fryer?
Absolutely! Tortilla pizza works very well in an air fryer. To do so, skip the toasting of one side because it will cook all at once. Assemble it on the flour tortilla, place it in the basket of your air fryer, and cook at 400 degrees for 4-6 minutes until toasted. The amount of time will vary depending on the power level of your air fryer, which can be anywhere between 1300 to 1700-watt machines.
Do I need to use a cooling rack?
While it isn’t required, if you don’t use the cooling rack, when you flip the toasted tortilla over to cook the side with the toppings, the bottom of the it will steam and your tortilla pizza will no longer be crispy. So, for me, the use of the cooling rack is a must because I love the thin, crispy pizza experience.
Is tortilla pizza healthy?
This question is always a tough one to answer because how one person defines “healthy” is very different from another. In my viewpoint, yes tortilla pizza is healthy. It is less than 225 calories and has 10 grams of protein. If you are concerned about the levels of fat and want to decrease the calorie count, use turkey pepperoni and low fat mozzarella cheese.
Recipe Variations
Being a home cook provides endless opportunities to experiment with recipes, personalizing them to your tastes and creativity. Any of the following variations would be great spin-offs of this tortilla pizza recipe.
Change out the sauce and try using some garlic butter, alfredo sauce, or BBQ sauce instead of the marinara.
Make it cheesy by adding additional cheese variations like cheddar, pepper jack, feta, or blue cheese.
Add spice with a few shakes of red pepper flakes, a squeeze of your favorite hot sauce, or some fresh sliced jalapeños on top.
Include vegetables on top of your pizza. Sliced onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes, and fresh spinach would all be delicious.
Switch up the protein by swapping out the pepperoni for cooked sausage, ground beef, chicken, ham, or prosciutto.
