Stuffed Pizza Waffles
Why I Love Pizza Waffles
So my friend, are you feeling overwhelmed by summer yet? Yeah, me too! Mainly, I am overwhelmed by the constant supply of food my children require when they are out of school. No lie, they eat all day long and my grocery bill definitely reflects the seasonal change. I won’t even mention all the friends that hang out at Casa Jones looking for a snack or ten. Yes, ten.
Around here, lunchtime in the summer is very much a “fend for yourself” type of setting. Except for the youngest of my six kids, they are all very capable of preparing something healthy and appropriate to eat for lunch. Not that they always do, but they are capable.
So last week when I offered these Stuffed Pizza Waffles as a lunch option to my 14-year-old son and his friends, they were all intrigued. So much so they were quickly in the kitchen making their own food for lunch. Even kids who had never made their own lunch before! They had a blast making them together and found the gooey cheese leaking out of the waffles especially intoxicating. You know teenage boys. So easily entertained.
I was inspired to let my kiddos try pizza waffles out for themselves when I saw it on the Pillsbury website. However, I didn’t like their version of the recipe because it used biscuit dough. I decided to give pizza dough a try and it worked perfectly. You can either make your own homemade pizza dough recipe or you can buy pre-made pizza dough from the grocery store. And, don’t forget the dipping sauce! Kids are all about dipping any and all food.
What Are Pizza Waffles
Pizza waffles are a type of food that is made by sandwiching pizza ingredients inside raw pizza dough or refrigerated crescent rolls dough, then cooking it on a waffle iron. The result is a waffle with a crispy, golden crust and a filling of pizza toppings such as cheese, tomato sauce, and various types of meat and vegetables. Pizza waffles can be eaten as a snack or as a meal and can be served with condiments such as marinara sauce or ranch dressing. They are a very kid-friendly recipe and easy for kids to make independently.
Pizza Waffles Ingredients and Supplies
Any or all of these ingredients can be purchased from the grocery store or made at home from scratch.
Raw pizza dough or refrigerated crescent rolls dough
If you can layer some simple ingredients, you can make pizza waffles at home! And don’t be afraid to play around with recipe variations to suit your taste.
Time needed: 10 minutes
How to Make Pizza Waffles
Preheat the waffle maker
If the waffle iron isn’t hot, the dough will stick and make quite a mess. Lightly grease with nonstick cooking spray.
Prepare the pizza dough or crescent rolls dough
Roll the dough so it is about ¼ inch thick. Cut the dough into 3’ x 3” squares. You will need one for the top and one for the bottom of each pizza waffle.
Layer the pizza waffles
Lay down one square of dough, then add pepperoni slices and sliced mozzarella cheese. Top with the second square of dough and press down along the edges.
Cook the pizza waffles in the waffle maker
Press down firmly, but do not lock the lid or all the ingredients will squeeze out of the pizza waffles. Cook until golden brown and the dough is fully baked.
Serve while hot
You can serve the pizza waffles whole, or cut them into smaller pieces. Both marinara sauce and ranch dressing make great dips for the waffles.
Pizza Waffles FAQs
Can you put dough in a waffle maker?
Yes, uncooked pizza or bread dough can certainly be cooked in a waffle maker, as can refrigerated crescent rolls. Be sure to use nonstick cooking spray on the inside of your waffle maker so the dough doesn’t stick in between the divots. Because the dough will rise as it cooks, it is important not to lock the lid on the waffle iron. Push it down firmly when it is inside the waffle maker, but allow it to rise as it bakes.
Can I use Pam on my waffle maker?
Yes, you can use a light coating of nonstick spray on your waffle maker. Just make sure to follow the instructions on the nonstick spray can and apply a light, even coating to the surface of the waffle maker before heating it up and cooking the waffles. This will help prevent the waffles from sticking and make them easier to remove when they are done cooking.
How do you know when the pizza waffles are done cooking?
Since each waffle maker will cook at a slightly different temperature, it is hard to give a set time for when the pizza waffles will be finished baking. So instead, do a “test” waffles and time it for your own waffle iron. First look for doneness first by their color. The pizza waffle should be a nice golden brown color. If it is light brown, keep it in longer. Second, cut one open and be sure the dough is fully cooked all the way through. For my waffle iron, it was about 5 minutes. Once you have that time from your first waffle, just repeat it with the remaining ingredients.
Recipe Variations
Being a home cook provides endless opportunities to experiment with recipes, personalizing them to your tastes and creativity. Any of the following variations would be great spin-offs of these pizza waffles.
Make it spicy by adding some fresh finely chopped jalapeños, a shake of red pepper flakes, or a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce before adding the top piece of pizza dough.
Add vegetables to the pizza waffles by finely chopping them and adding them in with the pepperoni. Fresh bell peppers, onion, mushrooms, spinach, olives, and tomatoes would all be delicious.
Use refrigerated crescent rolls in place of the pizza dough. If you use this option, there’s no need to spray the waffle iron with nonstick cooking spray because the crescent rolls have a high amount of butter in them already.
Try different cheeses to change up the flavor profile. You can keep the mozzarella in the pizza waffles and add some sharp cheddar cheese, pepper jack, or gorgonzola cheese.
Use alfredo sauce instead of marinara sauce for a different flavor profile completely. This recipe variation is especially delicious using with chicken, bacon, and fresh spinach.
Switch up the meats by using diced ham, chicken, bacon, ground beef, anchovies, or sausage. Just be sure to cook all meats fully before you assemble the pizza waffles. The pizza waffles will not get hot enough to cook the protein and you can get very sick.

Preheat your waffle iron. Lightly grease with nonstick spray.
Roll out the pizza dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into equal-sized squares, about 3″ x 3″ but it doesn’t have to be exact.
Lay the sliced mozzarella in the center of the dough, being generous with the cheese because some will leak out. Add the pepperoni, then top with another square of pizza dough. Press down on the edges.
Place on the waffle iron and close the lid, pressing down firmly but do not lock the lid. The lid will raise slightly while the dough cooks, but that is fine. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown. Serve with marinara sauce or ranch dressing for dipping.

My son and I adore different pizza ideas. Especially the easy one with English muffins. I usually make his breakfast sammies with waffles and bacon or sausage. This will be a great twist on our pizza nights in.
