Are you ready to get your kiddos in the kitchen and make some Easter treats together? This easy Bunny Cupcakes recipe is here for the win! Just look at these cute little marshmallow ears poking out the top of the fur-frosted cupcakes. If you are looking for an easy spring treat to make with your kids, this is it! And, you can make them from a box of cake mix and a can of frosting. No need to make this one from scratch unless that is your jam.
Why I Love These Easter Bunny Cupcakes
Let’s be honest. When you have six kids, it is important for fun activities and recipes that we do together also to be quick and easy. If they are too long or complicated, we only end up with too many tears and too much crying. And my kids get upset too 🙂
My little three had so much fun making these cupcakes, especially the bunny ears. Even though all the kids were involved, my five-year-old was the only one who let me photograph her while working. I think the other five kids might start charging me to model for blog posts if I’m not careful!
My kids loved taking these adorable Easter Bunny cupcakes to school the next day. They got so many comments and questions about how they made them from both adults and their friends.
While I used my favorite grass decorating tip to create this adorable bunny fur on the cupcakes, I’ve also included two other fur options you can use that don’t require any special equipment. Remember, make it work for your family, and don’t worry about trying to make them “right.” There is no such thing!
Bunny Cupcake Ingredients
The recipe uses a boxed white cake mix and prepared frosting, but you can certainly use your favorite flavor of cake mix or homemade cake and frosting.
1 box of cake mix – you can use chocolate, yellow, or white
While none of these are required pieces of equipment, if you are looking for bunny cupcakes that look like the ones in this post, they will make it very simple.
You’ll be amazed at how easily these Easter treat ideas come together, and all use store-bought ingredients if you want to make them super quick.
Time needed: 45 minutes
How to Make Bunny Cupcakes
Bake a batch of cupcakes and allow them to cool completely.
Use your favorite cake recipe or your favorite boxed recipe if that’s easiest for you.
Make the marshmallow bunny ears
Cut regular-sized marshmallows in half diagonally and dip the cut side into pink sugar sprinkles.
Frost the cooled cupcakes
Use white frosting, either from a can or homemade. Use a grass tip inside a decorating bag to create the look of bunny fur.
Top the frosted cupcakes with the marshmallow ears
Do this before the frosting gets firm or they won’t stick well enough.
Decorating Variations for Bunny Cupcakes
To frost the cupcakes and make them look like fur, you have a few options. I used canned white frosting and piped it on using a grass tip inside a disposable decorating bag. The results look just like a furry little bunny 🙂
Another option is to cover the bunny cupcakes in white frosting and then roll the frosting in shredded coconut, but if your kids feel the way mine do about coconut, that won’t be an option. Maybe your kids are less picky than mine 🙂
If you don’t mind a larger amount of frosting, grab an ice cream scoop and use it to create a nice round of frosting on top of each cupcake. You can leave it plain or add some coconut on top.
Your last frosting option, and the one my kids used when decorating their cupcakes, is to use a knife and slather on the white frosting. Once you have your frosting on each cupcake, just add those adorable marshmallow bunny ears on top!
We like the way these Easter bunny cupcakes looked with just their cute pink ears but you can easily add some candy eyes and black licorice whiskers. You just have to decide if you want a more realistic-looking rabbit or not.
Bunny Cupcakes FAQs
How do you make cupcakes look like rabbits?
Use can use your favorite white frosting to create the fur in three different ways, depending on the supplies you have on hand at home. First, use a grass decorating tip inside a decorating bag to quickly pipe the fur on top of each cupcake. If you don’t have those supplies, you can just use an ice cream scooper to put a round shape of frosting on top. Or, you can use a knife to add frosting to the top and then dip them into shredded coconut to give them the appearance of fur.
Once you have your frosting fur base, use regular-sized marshmallows cut diagonally and dipped into pink sugar for ears. You can leave the bunny cupcakes like this or add some candy eyes and black licorice whiskers.
How do you cut marshmallows into rabbit ears?
You need to use a sharp pair of scissors to cut the marshmallows instead of mashing them. You could also use a very sharp knife but I’ve found scissors work best. You want to cut them diagonally across the length from one corner to the other. See the picture below for reference. Once cut, the inside edge will be sticky so you can dip that edge into the pink decorating sugar.
Recipe FAQs
How to store bunny cupcakes
The key to storing these cupcakes is to be sure your airtight container has a tall enough top so the fur and bunny ears don’t get smashed. I really like these disposable cupcake containers if I am taking the bunny cupcakes somewhere. If you are just keeping them at home, I like a cupcake container like this one that keeps the cupcakes fresh as well as protects the decorations on top. After all that work, you don’t want the fur and ears to get smashed.
Can you freeze Easter bunny cupcakes?
Yes, you can freeze your Easter bunny cupcakes but you have to do it before they are frosted. Bake them as directed and let them completely cool. Freeze them in an airtight freezer container stacked in a single layer. If you are going to freeze the cupcakes for longer than a few weeks, I would wrap them individually in plastic wrap before freezing them so they don’t get freezer burn.
Once it is time to decorate your bunny cupcakes, let them thaw at room temperature for 4-6 hours. If there is any moisture on top of the cupcakes, use a paper towel to dab it away. Decorate each cupcake according to the recipe below.
Can I make bunny mini cupcakes?
YES! This bunny cupcake recipe and decorating technique would make adorable mini cupcakes. You will need both a mini muffin pan and mini cupcake liners to transform them into bite-size cupcakes. Reduce the oven temperature by 25 degrees and bake them for half the amount of time. You’ll know they are finished when they spring back when you touch their centers. When it comes to decorating them, you will use the same techniques but use mini marshmallows instead of the standard size.

Yield:24 cupcakes 1x
Ingredients
Scale
1 – 15 ounce box of cake mix – any flavor
2 – 16 ounce cans of white frosting
24 regular-size marshmallows
pink decorating sugar
Instructions
Bake the cupcakes in cupcake liners according to package directions. Let them cool completely before decorating.
While the cupcakes bake and cool, prepare the marshmallow ears. Use sharp scissors to cut the length of the marshmallow diagonally. That will create a sticky side of the marshmallow to dip into the pink decorating sugar.
Place a grass tip into a decorating bag and fill the bag with the frosting. Cover the top of each cooled cupcake with the white fur frosting and before the frosting begins to dry on the surface, insert the ears on the top.
You can just frost for the fur with a knife if you don’t have a grass decorating tip, or frost the cupcakes and dip them into shredded coconut. You can also add candy eyes, nose, and whiskers if desired.
