Traditional Dutch Apple Pie with Crumb Streusel

Ingredients

1 store-bought refrigerated pie crust or your favorite homemade recipe

8 cups peeled and sliced apples

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup flour

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1/4 teaspoon cinnmon

1/8 teaspoon nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon kosher salt

For the crumb topping:

1 cup flour

2/3 cup light brown sugar

1/2 cup salted butter, room temperature


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Roll out the pie crust into a 9″ pie pan and crimp the edges. Place in the fridge to keep it cold while you prepare the rest of the steps.
  3. Combine the apples, flour, sugar, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl. Set aside.
  4. Blend together with your fingers the flour, brown sugar, and butter for the crumb topping until the butter is mixed in enough so you can squeeze it with your hand and it sticks together.
  5. Pour the apples into the pie crust, then top with the crumb streusel, making some bigger and some smaller crumbs.
  6. Bake the pie on the middle rack for 40-45 minutes, until bubbly and golden brown.  Allow to cool completely before serving.
